Types Of Asteroids...
There are many types of asteroids, but are classed into 3 groups. C-Group, X-Group, and S-Type. Asteroids are commonly classified by the Tholen Classification system. There are some types of asteroids that are not put into the 2 groups. What asteroids contain depends on what type the asteroid is.
C-Group
About 75% of asteroids are in the C-Group. They are like the sun without helium and hydrogen. They are the darkest type of asteroids except for D-Type asteroids. Types of asteroids in the C-Group include C-Type, B-Type, F-Type, and G-Type. C-Type asteroids produce red light and are like the sun without the helium and hydrogen. B-Type asteroids are an uncommon type of asteroid. They are the same as C-Type, but the light it produces is blue instead of red. F-Type asteroids are the same as B-Type asteroids, and can be grouped as the same. G-Type asteroids and C-Type can also be grouped together as the same type.
X-Group
About 8% of asteroids are in the X-Group. Types of asteroids in the X-Group are M-Type, E-Type, and P-Type. M-Type are very metallic while E-Type are more reflective types of asteroids. P-Type asteroids are also less reflective than E-Type.
S-Type
Although it does not have the word "group" in it, it is considered a group because 17% of asteroids are S-Type. They are mostly made up of stone, but can contain other materials.
Smaller Types
Some asteroids are not as common as others and therefore cannot be classified under C or X groups. 6 small types of asteroids. These are A-Type, D-Type, T-Type, Q-Type, R-Type, and V-Type. A-Type asteroids are very rare. These asteroids produce a red light. A-Type asteroids are so rare that since 2005, only 17 have been found. D-Type asteroids have a dim reflection and produce a red light. T-Type asteroids are rare and dark. They produce a dim red light and are believed to be related to D, C, and P-Type asteroids. Q-Type asteroids are uncommon and not much is know about them. R-Type asteroids are relatively bright. V-Type asteroids are moderately bright and are similar to S-Type asteroids.
